The Centre for Communication Systems Research, or CCSR, is the UK's largest and most well-known academic research centre in Mobile and Satellite Communication Systems. Established for over 10 years as one of a number of autonomous research centres at the University of Surrey, it now houses some 130 researchers including around 90 PhD researchers.

Role & Activities in the project

The main contributions from the University of Surrey will be in work packages (WPs) 4 and 5. In WP 4, our work will involve investigating smart antenna techniques to use in reducing the necessary uplink and downlink transmit power, as well as evaluating the subsequent reduction in exposure. In WP 5, our work will analyse the impact of cell sizes and topologies on exposure supported by measurements.

Key people involved

Muhammad Ali Imran –. His areas of interests are energy efficiency of wireless communication systems, physical layer communication techniques and fundamental limits of communication channels and systems.

Fabien Heliot – Expertise in energy efficiency, cooperative communication, MIMO, and radio resource management – to contribute to innovative resource allocation / scheduling and network topologies for reducing the EMF in WPs 4 and 5.

Tim Brown – Expertise in propagation channel measurements, antenna design, channel models – to support work in measurement and modelling in WPs 4 and 5 of the impact of smart communication techniques and cell deployments on exposure.
